What Is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is when a person has unwanted thoughts (and fears) that become an obsession and lead to repetitive behaviors (compulsions). This pattern typically causes distress to the point it interferes with an individual's day and is something they have difficulty controlling. The obsessions will generally cause stress and anxiety, and the compulsive behavior becomes the only way to ease that anxiety. At Good Day Psychiatry, Dr. Jessica Spiegelberg uses psychotherapy and/or medication to help individuals with OCD better control their symptoms so they can manage their daily lives. If you're in Hobbs, NM, Plainview, TX, or a surrounding area, contact Dr. Spiegelberg in Lubbock, TX or Longmont, CO to learn more about how you can start managing your obsessive thoughts and reduce compulsive behaviors.

How Is OCD Treated?

While treatment for OCD may not result in a cure, it can bring you closer to feeling contentment and fewer symptoms throughout the day. There are two forms of treatment we offer for obsessive-compulsive disorder — psychotherapy and medication. We find that most of our patients see the best results with a combination of these treatments. There are a few types of psychotherapy we can try. They include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): This therapy is designed to help you understand your thoughts and emotions so you can recognize them and change those thoughts.
  • Exposure and response prevention (ERP): During ERP, you will be exposed to your trigger while you attempt to resist performing a compulsion. This allows you to recognize that you can stay in your feared circumstance without anything bad happening. Over time, this should help you let go of those anxious thoughts and compulsions.
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): During this therapy, Dr. Spiegelberg will help you understand that your obsessive thoughts are just that — thoughts. This can help take the power of these thoughts away so you can live with them without feeling overwhelmed.

If it becomes necessary that you will need medication intervention or you choose medication instead of psychotherapy, we will likely start you on an SRI (serotonin reuptake inhibitor). These medications are most commonly known as antidepressants. However, not all antidepressants will work for OCD. Some common medications used for obsessive-compulsive disorder include:

  • Zoloft®
  • Celexa®
  • Lexapro®
  • Paxil®

Whatever intervention you choose, Dr. Spiegelberg and her team will work diligently to support you.

I’m incredibly grateful to have found Jessica. From the very beginning, she took the time to truly understand me, diving into both my past and present experiences. Her patience and willingness to listen as I shared my struggles made a huge difference. Jessica provided a diagnosis that finally made me feel understood, and she educated me about it, which helped me realize I’m not alone—others feel this way too. Her calm, well-spoken manner and the cozy atmosphere of her office made it easy to feel comfortable. I also appreciate that she not only prescribed medication but recommended a therapist to support my treatment further. I genuinely look forward to my visits with her as we take the next steps on my journey to better mental health. Highly recommend Jessica to anyone seeking compassionate and insightful care.
